Five members of the DMACC men's basketball team have been named to the Region 11 Division II All-Region Men's Basketball Team and DMACC head coach Blake Sandquist has been named the Region 11 Division II Coach of the Year.
The awards were announced earlier today by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
Sophomores Trevian Carson of Des Moines and Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City were named to the first team and Carson was named the Region 11 Division II Player of the Year. Second-team honors went to freshmen Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids and Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, and freshman Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., received honorable mention recognition.
Carson has led the Bears to a 29-3 record and a 17-1 mark in the ICCAC as DMACC won its second consecutive ICCAC regular season championship. Carson, who is averaging 15.5 points and 7.9 rebounds a game, finished 10th or higher in the ICCAC in scoring average (seventh), rebounds (third), assists and steals. His 62 total assists in conference play were the fourth most in league play and he had the seventh most steals with 30. Carson is shooting 55 percent from the field in league play and is shooting 58 percent overall. He joins Willie Guy, Jaden Graves and Angelo Winkel as DMACC men's basketball players who have won Player of the Year honors in four of the past five seasons.
Carson has scored 488 points this season. He is 188-of-223 from the field, including 38-of-96 from three-point range for 40 percent. Carson has made 74 of 92 free throw attempts for 80 percent.
Carson leads the Bears in rebounding with 251 rebounds, including 192 defensive rebounds. His season totals also include 120 assists, 61 steals and 39 blocked shots.
Fisher leads DMACC in scoring with 533 points and a 16.5 average. He is shooting 57 percent from the field, hitting 207 of 364 field attempts. Fisher is 26-of-83 from three-point range for 31 percent and has made 93 of 129 free throws for 72 percent. He has 154 rebounds, including 116 defensive rebounds, and his season totals include 46 assists, 49 steals and 24 blocked shots.
Austin has scored 375 points and is averaging 11.7 points a game. He is shooting 50 percent from the field, having made 128 of 256 field goal attempts. Austin is 60-of-149 from three-point range for 40 percent and 59-of-72 from the free throw line for 82 percent. Austin is second to Carson in rebounds with 197 rebounds, including 141 defensive rebounds. His season totals include 40 assists, 22 steals and 20 blocked shots.
Jefferson has scored 290 points and is averaging 11.2 points a game. He is shooting 48 percent from the field with 105 field goals from 219 attempts and he is 28-of-83 from three-point range for 34 percent. Jefferson has made 52 of 68 free throw attempts for 77 percent. His season totals also include 124 rebounds, including 86 defensive rebounds, 46 assists, 38 steals and 37 blocked shots.
Omweno has scored 283 points and is averaging 9.8 points a game. He is shooting 39 percent from the field, having made 104 of 266 field goal attempts. Omweno has made 60 of 183 shots from beyond the arc for 33 percent and his15-of-23 from the free throw line for 65 percent. Omweno's season totals include 71 rebounds, 37 assists, 49 steals and four blocked shots.
Sandquist has been named Coach of the Year for the second season in a row. The 17 conference wins is the most in ICCAC Division II Men's Basketball since the Bears went 17-4 in the extended, conference-only COVID schedule back in the spring of 2021.
Sandquist is in his third season as the head men's basketball coach and has compiled a 94-16 record, including a 46-8 mark in the ICCAC with two regular season championships. The Bears, whose season was cut short behind an 83-76 loss to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the semifinals of the Region 11 Division II Men's Basketball Championship, are waiting to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the 2025 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Basketball Championship. DMACC, ranked third in the most recent Division II poll from the NJCAA, has appeared in the tournament in four of the past five seasons. The Bears won the national title in 2021, finished third in 2022 and fifth in 2024.
