DMACC men's basketball team tops NIACC for 15th straight win

 

Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 19 points and sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines and freshman Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, came away with 15 and 12 points respectively as the DMACC men's basketball team took a 72-62 decision from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) February 22 at Mason City.

 

The Bears, ranked fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 27-2 overall and 16-1 with the win, their 15th straight, and also clinched no worse than a tie for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) regular season championship. DMACC can with the title outright with a win over Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Feb. 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium. KCC is ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll.

 

DMACC, which has won or tied for the ICCAC title five of the last six seasons, suffered its only conference loss, a 70-53 decision against KCC, Dec. 15 at Cedar Rapids. KCC is 26-2 overall and 13-2 in the ICCAC. The Eagles, who have won eight in a row, lost to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), 83-62, Dec. 4 at Cedar Rapids and fell to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC), 80-70, Jan. 22, also at Cedar Rapids. DMACC swept both ICCC and IWCC.

 

In defeating NIACC on Feb. 22, DMACC led 35-19 at halftime and held off several threats from the Trojans in the second half to complete a season sweep of the two-game series.

 

The Bears shot 40 percent with 24 field goals from 60 attempts. They made nine of 32 shots from three-point range and went 15-of-20 from the free throw line.

 

NIACC, 17-11 and 8-9, was 22-of-66 from the field for 33 percent shooting. The Trojans made five of 20 three-point shots and went 13-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

Carson had a double-double with 12 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 47-40 advantage on the boards. He also led the Bears in assists with four and in steals with three.

 

The DMACC-KCC game will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. The winner will get the No. 1 seed in the 2024-25 Region 11 Division II Men's Basketball Championship that begins March 1.
