Fisher, Jefferson lead DMACC men's basketball team past Ellsworth, 104-67

Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 25 points and freshman Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, added 23 points to lead the DMACC men's basketball team to a 104-67 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) February 8 at Iowa Falls.

 

The Bears, ranked fourth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), never trailed in sweeping their season series against the Panthers and extending their winning streak to 12 consecutive games.

 

The win gives DMACC a 24-2 overall record and a 13-1 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). The Bear retained their one-game lead over Kirkwood Community College (KCC), which is 11-2 in conference play. North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is a distant third at 8-6.

 

Freshman Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., and sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines joined Fisher and Jefferson in double figures with 17 and 16 points respectively.

 

Jefferson, sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., and freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids hit three-pointers as DMACC scored the game's first nine points and opened up a 22-8 lead with the game less than six minutes old. ECC closed to within seven points twice later in the opening half before DMACC closed the half with a 20-4 run for a 54-31 lead at intermission. The Panthers never got closer than 21 points in the second half.

 

DMACC, which defeated ECC 94-81 when the two teams played Jan. 18 inside the DAMCC gymnasium, shot 54 percent with 37 field goals from 68 attempts. The Bears made 14 of 31 three-point shots for 45 percent and hit 16 of 23 free throw attempts for 70 percent.

 

ECC, which fell to 17-8 and 7-7, was 24 of 58 from the field for 41 percent. The Panthers made just six of 25 shots from beyond the arc for 24 percent and were 13-of-20 from the free throw line for 65 percent.

 

DMACC had a 38-32 advantage in rebounding with Carson's seven rebounds leading the Bears. Fisher and Jefferson had six rebounds apiece and Jefferson topped DMACC in assists with four. He also led the Bears in steals with five and in blocked shots with four.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will host Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) Feb. 15 with game time set for 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Reivers are 15-10 overall and 7-7 in the ICCAC. Their losses include a 94-92 decision against DMACC Jan. 15 at Council Bluffs.
