Sophomores Trevian Carson of Des Moines and Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City combined for 46 points as the DMACC men's basketball team swept its season series against Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) behind a 92-68 win January 29 at Sioux City.
The Bears also defeated the Comets, 105-58, when the two teams played Dec. 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Carson scored 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and Fisher added 22 points as DMACC, the No. 6 team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 22-2 for the season. The Bears also kept their lead in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) at 11-1.
Freshmen Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., and Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids joined Carson and Fisher in double figures with 14, 12 and 10 points respectively.
DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears used a 13-1 run to build a 21-7 lead with 11 minutes, 34 seconds left in the half but WITCC answered with a 12-2 run to trail 23-19 with 8:19 to play. DMACC pulled away again, outscoring the Comets 19-6 the rest of the half for a 42-25 advantage at halftime.
WITCC, which fell to 5-17 and 2-9, never got closer than 15 points in the second half and the final score was DMACC's biggest margin of the game.
The Bears shot 51 percent from the field, making 36 of 69 field goal attempts. They were 7-of-27 from three-point range and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.
WITCC made 29 of 75 field goal attempts for 39 percent. The Comets shot just 20 percent from three-point range making four of 20 attempts. They were 6-of-10 from the free throw line.
DMACC had a 48-37 advantage on the boards with Carson's nine rebounds leading the way. Austin had seven rebounds, Jefferson came away with six and Omweno and freshman Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., grabbed five apiece. Carson and sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., dished out three assists apiece and Shakur led the Bears in steals with two.
The DMACC men's basketball team is idle until Feb. 5 when the Bears will be home to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). Game time is 7:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 11-10 overall and 5-7 in the ICCAC. DMACC defeated the Tritons 70-57 when the two teams played Dec. 18 at Fort Dodge.
