- Sophomore Trevian Carson leads DMACC with 21 points
- Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher and freshmen Andrew Austin and Jaden Jefferson also score in double figures
- Bears pull away in the second half
Sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines had 21 points, four rebounds, two steals, two assists and three blocked shots in leading the DMACC men's basketball team to an 81-65 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) January 25 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and freshmen Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids and Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, also scored in double figures as the Bears improved to 20-2 overall and 10-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Fisher scored 12 points, Austin had 14 and Jefferson came away with 18.
The win, coupled with Kirkwood Community College's (KCC) loss to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) on Jan. 22 gives DMACC sole possession of first place in the conference. KCC is second at 8-2
The Bears, ranked sixth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, started slowly and trailed by as many as six points, 20-14, midway through the first half. A pair of free throws by sophomore Nathan Ruisch of Johnston gave DMACC a 30-29 lead with 2 minutes, 32 seconds to play in the half and the Bears led the rest of the way. They had a 37-33 lead at halftime.
SWCC, which fell to 10-14 and 4-8, stayed close early in the second half, trailing 50-47 with 14:32 to play. DMACC then scored nine unanswered points for a 59-47 lead at the 11:40 mark of the half but a 9-2 run from SWCC got the Spartans within five at 61-56 with 9:06 remaining. The Bears answered with an 11-2 run to go up 72-58 with 5:19 to play and SWCC never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
DMACC shot 48 percent from the field, hitting 28 of 58 field goal attempts, including 15-of-26 in the second half. The Bears were 7-of-31 from three-point range and 18-of-20 from the free throw line.
SWCC made 24 of 61 field goal attempts for 39 percent. The Spartans hit eight of 24 attempts from beyond the arc and were 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
SWCC had a 34-33 advantage in rebounding with Austin and Jefferson grabbing seven rebounds apiece to lead the Bears. Sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., dished out seven assists and Austin led the Bears in steals with three. Jefferson joined Carson with three blocked shots.
The DMACC men's basketball team will play Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) Jan. 28 at Columbus, Neb. The Bears came away with an 87-79 win when the two teams played Dec. inside the DMACC gymnasium.
