The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Andrew Austin the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the week of January 6 to 12.
Austin, a freshman from Rock Rapids, is being honored by the conference for the first time this season and he is one of four members of the DMACC men's basketball team to be honored this season. Dylan Omweno, a freshman from Apple Valley, Minn., was honored the time period of Dec. 17 to Jan. 5 and Da'Shon Fisher, a sophomore from Iowa City, was honored the week of Nov. 25 to Dec. 1. Trevian Carson, a sophomore from Des Moines, has been honored twice, the week of Nov. 11 to 17 and the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 3.
Austin scored 41 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished out six assists in helping the Bears to two wins during the week. He scored 16 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out an assist in an 88-71 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Jan. 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium and scored a season-high 25 points with seven rebounds and five assists in a 122-68 win over Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) Jan. 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Austin has scored 187 points this season and is one of five DMACC players averaging in double figures at 10.4 points a game. He is shooting 46 percent from the field with 62 field goals from 136 attempts. Austin has made 21 of 70 three-point shots for 30 percent and is shooting 81 percent from the free throw line, having made 42 of 52 attempts.
Austin is averaging 6.8 rebounds a game with 123 rebounds, including 90 defensive rebounds. His season also includes 24 assists, 13 steals and seven blocked shots.
The DMACC men's basketball team, which moved from seventh to sixth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), faces Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) tonight at Council Bluffs. DMACC is 16-2 overall with a four-game winning streak and is tied with Kirkwood Community College (KCC) for first place in the ICCAC at 6-1. IWCC is 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the ICCAC.
