The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Dylan Omweno the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the time period of December 17 to January 5.
Omweno, a freshman from Apple Valley, Minn., is the third member of the DMACC men's basketball team to be honored by the conference this season. Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City was honored the week of Nov. 25 to Dec. 1 and sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines has been honored twice, the week of Nov. 11 to 17 and the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 3.
Omweno, the Bears' sixth man, totaled 40 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in leading DMACC to two victories during the Dec. 17 to Jan. 5 time frame. He scored a team-high 19 points in a 70-57 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) on Dec. 18 and came away with a team-leading 21 points in a 96-80 win over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Jan. 4.
Omweno shot 54 percent from the floor in the win over ICCC, making seven of 13 field goal attempts, including 5-of-11 from three-point range. He also contributed one rebound, one assists and two steals to the win.
Omweno made eight of 14 field goal attempts, including 5-of-10 from three-point range in the win over NIACC. He also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win.
Omweno has scored 163 points and is averaging 11.6 points and 3.1 rebounds a game for the Bears this season. He is shooting 40 percent from the field, having made 60 of 152 field goal attempts. Omweno is 36-of-109 from three-point range for 33 percent and has made seven of 13 free throw attempts for 54 percent. His season also includes 44 rebounds, 16 assists and 23 steals.
The DMACC men's basketball team is 14-2 this season and is tied with Kirkwood Community College (KCC) and Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) for first place in the ICCAC at 5-1. The Bears, ranked seventh in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), are home to Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) tonight. Game time is 7:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ILCC is 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the ICCAC.
