DMACC men's basketball team tops Iowa Central CC behind 19 points from Dylan Omweno

Freshman Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., came off the bench to score 19 points and lead the DMACC men's basketball team to a 70-57 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) December 18 at Fort Dodge.

 

Sophomores Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City, Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., and Trevian Carson of Des Moines scored 16, 13 and 10 points respectively as the Bears improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC, ranked seventh in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), had a 19-15 advantage with 5 minutes 45 seconds remaining in the first half when ICCC put together a 13-0 run that gave the Tritons a 27-19 lead at the 2:09 mark of the half.

 

ICCC had a 31-25 lead at halftime and led 34-29 lead before layups from freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids, Carson and Ambrose put the Bears ahead 35-34 with 15:02 to play. The Tritons regained the advantage at 39-37 with 12:19 remaining before DMACC used a 15-4 run to open up a 52-43 lead with 6:55 to play. Omweno's three-point basket at the 11:03 mark of the half broke a 39-39 tie and gave the Bears the lead for good.

 

DMACC shot 48 percent from the field, making 26 of 54 field goal attempts, including going 8-of-28 from three-point range. The Bears were 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

Fisher recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 40-33 advantage on the boards. Fisher, Carson and freshman Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., dished out two assists apiece and Omweno led the Bears in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face North Iowa Area Community College Jan. 4. Game time is 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. NIACC is 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the ICCAC. The Trojans have received votes in the NJCAA Division II poll.
