Dylan Omweno leads DMACC men's basketball team past Central CC, 87-79

 

Freshman Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., led four players in double figures with 22 points as the DMACC men's basketball team improved to 9-1 for the season with an 87-79 win over Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) December 2 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and freshmen Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids and Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, also reached double figures for the Bears. Fisher scored 14 points, Jefferson had 16 points and Austin barely missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

 

CCC kept the game close throughout the first half, leading by seven points at 25-18 with 6 minutes, 34 seconds remaining until intermission. DMACC gained a 30-30 tie at the 3:39 mark of the half and then put together a 13-2 run for a 43-32 lead at halftime. Omweno ignited the run with a 3-point basket at the 2:32 mark of the half, putting the Bears on top for good at 33-32.

DMACC, ranked sixth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAAA), led throughout the second half and enjoyed its largest lead at 87-76 with 16 seconds remaining.

 

The Bears shot 42 percent in the win, hitting 26 of 62 field goal attempts. They were 14-of-39 from three-point range and 21-of-24 from the free throw line. Sixteen of Omweno's 22 points came from beyond the arc where he was 6-of-14.

 

Austin's nine rebounds led DMACC to a 45-34 advantage on the boards, including 13 offensive rebounds. Jefferson added seven rebounds, sophomore Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., finished with six and Omweno and sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., had five rebounds apiece. Freshman Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., led the Bears in assists with four and Jefferson topped DMACC in steals with four.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play tonight when the Bears are home to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC). Game time is 7:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. DMACC is 1-0 in league play. NECC is 3-4 overall and will make its 2024-25 ICCAC debut against the Bears.
