The DMACC men's basketball team improved to 4-0 for the season after winning a pair of games in the DMACC Classic November 8 and 9 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The Bears, ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, opened tournament play with a 99-73 win over Bryant and Stratton College (BSC) on Nov. 8 and defeated the William Penn University Junior Varsity (WPUJV), 104-68, on Nov. 9.
Sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines led five players in double figures with 19 points in DMACC's win over BSC. Freshman Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, added 15 points, freshman Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., had 14 points and sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Valley had 11 and 10 points respectively.
DMACC never trailed after Austin's three-pointer with the game 26 seconds old put the Bears up 3-1. A dunk by Ambrose ignited a 11-5 run that gave the Bears a 17-10 lead with just less than 13 minutes remaining in the first half and they pulled away from there, leading by as many as 18 points before settling for a 19-point advantage at halftime, 46-27.
DMACC, which led by as many as 33 points in the second half, shot 64 percent, hitting 36 of 56 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-20 from three-point range and 19-of-30 from the free throw line.
Austin's eight rebounds led DMACC to a 38-29 advantage in rebounding and Fisher, Carson and Jefferson topped the Bears in assists with four apiece. Carson and sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., led DMACC in steals with three apiece.
Ambrose scored 19 points and Fisher and Carson had 14 and 11 respectively in the Bears' win over WPUJV.
DMACC trailed by as many as seven points in the early going before a layup from Fisher gave the Bears the lead for good at 20-18 with just more than 12 minutes to play in the first half. DMACC had a 47-33 lead at the half and led by as many as 40 points in the second half.
The Bears shot 54 percent in the win, making 38 of 71 field goal attempts. They were 7-of-23 from three-point range and 21-of-22 from the free throw line.
DMACC came away with a 46-31 advantage in rebounding with Carson's 10 rebounds leading the way and giving him his second double-double of the season. Austin added seven rebounds and Fisher and Ambrose had six apiece. Shakur dished out a team-high seven assists and Jefferson led the Bears in steals with four.
The DMACC men's basketball team will host the second round of the DMACC Classic Nov. 15 and 16 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears will face the Grand View University Junior Varsity (GVUJV) on Nov. 15 and will play Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC) on Nov. 16. BHMCC is coached by former DMACC standout Kannon Burrage. Burrage played for the Bears in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
