DMACC men's basketball team earns postseason honors

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has announced the Division II Men's Basketball All-Region teams and the list included six members of the DMACC men's basketball team and head coach Blake Sandquist.

 

Sophomores Angelo Winkel of Algona and Trey Lewis of Johnston were named to the first team and Winkel was named the ICCAC Player of the Year. Second-team honors went to sophomores James Glenn of Altoona and Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz. Sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines received honorable mention recognition.

 

DMACC men's basketball coach Blake Sandquist was named the ICCAC Coach of the Year.

 

Winkel led the Bears in scoring and rebounding this season with 519 points and 232 rebounds. He averaged 16.7 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. Winkel shot 60 percent from the field, making 211 of 351 field goal attempts. He was 13-of-53 from three-point range for 25 percent and made 84 of 128 free throw attempts for 66 percent. Winkel's rebound total included 168 defensive rebounds and he also finished the regular season with 36 assists, 46 blocked shots and 15 steals.

Lewis scored 446 points and averaged 14.9 points a game. He shot 47 percent from the field with 153 field goals from 327 attempts. Lewis made 68 of 184 three-pointers for 37 percent and was 72-of-87 from the free throw line for 84 percent. He led the Bears in assists with 184 also finished the regular season with 136 rebounds, 42 steals and 10 blocked shots.

 

Glenn scored 393 points and averaged 12.3 points a game. He was one of the Bears' top shooters at 50 percent on 132 field goals in 263 attempts. Glenn was 72-of-163 from three-point range for 44 percent and made 57 of 65 free throw attempts for 88 percent. Glenn's regular season also included 113 rebounds, 62 assists, 47 steals and 12 blocked shots.

 

Thomas scored 327 points and averaged 10.9 points a game. He shot 43 percent from the field with 108 field goals from 251 attempts for 43 percent. Thomas made 64 of 171 three-pointers for 37 percent and was 47-of-60 from the free throw line for 78 percent. Thomas' regular season included 130 rebounds, 41 assists, 37 steals and 23 blocked shots.

 

Desmond ended the season with 332 points and a 10.7 averaged. He was 116-of-218 from the field for 53 percent and made seven of 31 three-pointers for 23 percent. Desmond was 93-of-126 from the free throw line for 74 percent and his regular-season included 157 rebounds, 89 assists, 28 steals and 21 blocked shots.

 

Carson scored 280 points and averaged 8.8 points a game. He was 108-of-186 from the field for 58 percent and drained 32 of 71 three-pointers for 45 percent. Carson was 32-of-38 from the free throw line for 84 percent and ended the regular season with 200 rebounds, 57 assists, 52 steals and 42 blocked shots.

 

Sandquist directed the Bears to a 28-4 record in his second season as head coach. The Bears were 14-1 at home, 11-2 on the road and 3-1 on neutral floors. They captured their fourth ICCAC regular-season championship in the past four years with a 16-2 record and put together four seven-game winning streaks during the season. DMACC was ranked among the top ten teams in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II during the season, including a No. 4 ranking the final poll. The Bears reached the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XI Division II Men's Basketball Championship before being eliminated with a loss to Ellsworth Community College (ECC).

 

Sandquist and his team are currently awaiting an at-large invitation to the NJCAA 2024 Division II Men's Basketball Championship. The Bears are among those teams being considered for an at-large invitation and would be making their fourth appearance in the national tournament in the past five years. DMACC won the national title in 2021 and finished third in 2022.
