DMACC's Angelo Winkel named ICCAC Athlete of the Week
  • Winkel averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds a game in leading the Bears to two wins

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Angelo Winkel the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the week of February 19 to 25.

 

Winkel, a sophomore from Algona, has been honored for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season. And he is the fourth member of the DMACC men's basketball team to be honored. He was also honored for the week of Feb. 12 to 18, the week of Dec. 11 to 17 and the week of Nov. 1 to 12.

 

Other DMACC men's basketball players to be honored include sophomore Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., (the week of Jan. 22 to 28); sophomore James Glenn of Altoona (the week of Nov. 27 to Dec. 3); and sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston (the week of Nov. 13 to 19).

 

Winkel averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds a game in leading the Bears to wins over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) and Kirkwood Community College (KCC) during the week. Winkel scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 102-70 win over ICCC on Feb. 17. He was 11 of 14 from the field, including 0-of-1 from three-point range and made two of four free throws. Ten of his 12 rebounds came on the defensive end of the court.

Winkel had 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 73-63 win over KCC on Feb. 21. He made eight of 14 field goal attempts, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and was 2-of-6 from the free throw line. All 10 of his rebounds came on the defensive end of the floor.

 

Winkel is second in the ICCAC in points per game at 17 and he is second in field goal percentage at 60.7 percent. Winkel ranks fifth in rebounds per game at 7.5.

 

Winkel has scored 476 points this season. His 60.7 shooting percentage comes from 193 field goals in 318 attempts. He is 13-of-50 from three-point range for 26 percent and has made 77 of 115 free throw attempts for 67 percent.

 

Winkel leads the Bears in rebounding with 211 rebounds, including 153 defensive rebounds. His season also includes 40 blocked shots, 30 assists and 12 steals.
