DMACC men's basketball team clinches share of ICCAC title with win over IWCC, 99-87

Sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston led five players in double figures as the DMACC men's basketball team clinched a share of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) regular season championship with a 99-87 win over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) February 24 at Council Bluffs.

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona had 21 points, freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 16 points and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines and sophomore Victory Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., finished with 14 and 11 points respectively as the Bears improved to 26-3 overall and 15-2 in the ICCAC.

DMACC's win gave the Bears no less than a share of the ICCAC regular season championship, DMACC's fourth in the past five seasons. The Bears can clinch the outright title with a win over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), Feb. 28 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

DMACC never trailed after a dunk by Fisher gave the Bears a 21-20 lead with just less than 10 minutes to play in the opening half. The shot started a small 8-2 run that gave the Bears a 27-22 lead at the 7 minute, 5 second mark of the half. DMACC led 47-37 at intermission and opened up leads of up to 17 points in the second half.

DMACC shot 58 percent, making 32 of 55 field goal attempts, including 12-of-23 from three-point range. Carson topped the Bears from long range, hitting four of five shots. DMACC was 23-of-27 from the free throw line.

IWCC, which fell to 16-13 overall and 9-8 in the ICCAC, shot 43 percent from the field with 33 field goals in 76 attempts. The Reivers were 12-of-30 from three-point range and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

Winkel barely missed his fourth consecutive double-double with nine rebounds as DMACC came away with a 35-23 advantage on the boards. Carson had seven rebounds and Lewis and Fisher grabbed five apiece. Lewis' seven assists topped DMACC and Desmond dished out six assists. Lewis and Carson had two steals apiece and Carson recorded three blocked shots with Winkel getting two.

The DMACC-NIACC game will be played at 3 p.m. Feb. 28 following a women's game between the two schools. NIACC is 9-19 overall and 3-14 in the ICCAC. The Trojans' losses included a 103-79 setback against DMACC Dec. 2 at Mason City.
