DMACC men's basketball hands KCC first home loss, 73-63
• Sophomore Angelo Winkel leads DMACC with 21 points and 10 rebounds

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona recorded his second consecutive double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the DMACC men's basketball team past Kirkwood Community College (KCC), 73-63, February 21 at Cedar Rapids.

 

Sophomores Trey Lewis Johnston and Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., reached double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively as the Bears improved to 25-3 overall and 14-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and became the first team to defeat KCC on its home floor this season. DMACC entered the game ranked fifth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and KCC is ranked eighth. 

 

KCC, which fell to 22-5 overall and 13-4 in the ICCAC, controlled the tempo in the early going, leading by as many as five points through the first 11 minutes of the opening half. DMACC, which trailed 19-14 with 8 minutes, 47 seconds left in the half, took its first lead since the opening seconds at 24-23 on a jump shot by Lewis at the 4:34 mark of the half. The basket sparked a 10-2 run that was capped by Winkel's three-pointer and gave the Bears a 32-25 lead with 2:11 remaining in the half.

 

DMACC led 39-29 at halftime and maintained its advantage throughout the second half. KCC, which got within four at 49-45 with 12:54 remaining, never got closer. DMACC later used a 7-2 run to open up a 67-52 lead with 4:11 to play

The Bears shot 47 percent and held the Eagles to 33 percent. DMACC was 26-of-55 from the field, including 7-of-22 from three-point range, and made 14 of 27 free throw attempts. KCC was 19-of-57 from the field, including just 3-of-16 from three-point range, and made 22 of 36 free throw attempts.

 

KCC controlled the boards, 41-32, with Winkel's 10 rebounds leading DMACC. Desmond and sophomore James Glenn of Altoona had five rebounds apiece. Glenn led the Bears in assists and steals with four and five respectively.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team travels to Council Bluffs on Feb. 24 to face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC). The Reivers are 7-18 overall and 3-13 in the ICCAC, including a 106-70 loss to the Bears Jan. 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

DMACC is closing in on its fourth ICCAC regular-season championship in the past five seasons. Following their game against IWCC, the Bears will close out the regular season with a home game against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC).DMACC defeated the Trojans 103-79 when the two teams played Dec.2 at Mason City.
