DMACC's Angelo Winkel named ICCAC Athlete of the Week
  • Winkel recorded two double-doubles during the week
  • Winkel scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds in a win over SWCC
  • Winkel tallied 24 points and had 11 rebounds in a win over ICCC

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Angelo Winkel the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the week of Feb. 12 to 18.

 

The honor is the third earned by Winkel this season and he is one of four members of the DMACC men's basketball team to be honored by the conference this season. Winkel was also honored for the week of Dec. 11 to 17 and the week of Nov. 1 to 12. Sophomore Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., was honored the week of Jan. 22 to 28, sophomore James Glenn of Altoona earned the honor the week of Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 and sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston was honored the week of Nov. 13 to 19.

 

Winkel, a sophomore from Algona, scored 44 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in wins over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) and Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) during the week. He was 9-of-12 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line for 20 points in an 80-43 win over SWCC and made 11 of 14 field goal attempts and went 2-of-4 from the free throw line in a 102-70 win over ICCC. Winkel had 10 rebounds in the win over SWCC and 11 in the ICCC game.

 

For the week Winkel made 20 of 26 field goal attempts for 77 percent and was 4-of-6 from the free throw line for 67 percent.

 

Winkel has scored 455 points this season and is averaging 16.9 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. He his shooting 60.3 percent from the field with 185 field goals in 307 attempts. He is 11-of-48 from three-point range for 23 percent and his 74-of-109 from the free throw line for 68 percent. Winkel ranks third in the ICCAC in scoring average and is second in field goal percentage.

 

Winkel has 202 rebounds, including 145 defensive rebounds. His season also includes 30 assists, 12 steals and 38 blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team, ranked fifth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), is 25-3 this season and leads the ICCAC at 14-2. The Bears will face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) Feb. 24 at Council Bluffs. They defeated the Reivers 106-70 when the two teams played Jan. 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
