Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona came away with a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds in leading the DMACC men's basketball team to a 102-70 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) February 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Winkel was one of six DMACC players to score in double figures as the Bears swept their season series against the Tritons and improved to 24-3 overall and 13-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines had 17 points, freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City came away with 14, sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., tallied 12 and sophomores James Glenn of Altoona and Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and winners of 10 of its last 11 games, never trailed in sending the Tritons to 5-21 overall and 2-13 in the ICCAC. The Bears used a 12-2 run to open up a 38-22 advantage with just less than three minutes to play in the first half and settled for a 48-27 lead at halftime. Their lead was never less than 17 points in the second half.

 

The win came behind 66 percent shooting from the field as the Bears drained 40 of 61 field goal attempts. They were 7-of-18 from three-point range and 15-of-24 from the free throw line.

Winkel's 12 rebounds helped DMACC to a 45-25 advantage on the boards. Fisher had seven rebounds, Desmond finished with six and Carson added five. Freshman Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., led the Bears in assists with seven and Fisher topped DMACC in steals with three. Carson recorded four blocked shots and Thomas had two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in an ICCAC showdown Feb. 21 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles are 22-4 overall, 13-3 in the ICCAC and are ranked ninth in the NJCAA Division II poll. Their losses include a 102-86 setback against DMACC Dec. 9 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
