Winkel's double-double leads DMACC men's basketball past SWCC, 80-43

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the DMACC men's basketball team to an 80-43 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) February 14 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomores Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., and James Glenn of Altoona had 16 and 14 points respectively and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines came away with 10 points as the Bears improved to 23-3 overall and 12-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), leads the ICCAC and Kirkwood Community College (KCC), Ellsworth Community College (ECC) and Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) are tied for second at 12-3. The Bears have completed their season series' against ECC and ILCC, splitting two games with each. DMACC will face KCC Feb. 22 at Cedar Rapids. The Bears defeated the Eagles 102-86 when the teams played Dec. 9 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

DMACC scored the game's first seven points and never trailed in sweeping its season series against SWCC. The Bears led 17-7 with the game less than nine minutes old and had a comfortable 38-22 lead at halftime.

 

DMACC opened the second half with a 15-2 run for a 53-24 lead and never looked back. The Bears led by as many as 38 points in the half.

 

DMACC shot 54 percent from the field and limited SWCC to 27 percent. The Bears drained 29 of 54 field goal attempts, including 3-of-16 from three point range, and made 19 of 26 free throw attempts.

 

SWCC was 15-of-55 from the field, including 8-of-30 from three-point range, and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel's 13 rebounds helped DMACC to a 43-23 advantage on the boards. Carson had eight rebounds, Desmond came away with seven and freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City had six. Freshman Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., led the Bears in assists with five and Carson added four. Carson also came away with five steals and two blocked shots. Freshman Omar Elchazli of Katy, Texas, also blocked two shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Tritons are 5-20 overall and 2-12 in the ICCAC. Their loses include a 90-76 setback against the Bears Dec. 13 at Fort Dodge.
