DMACC men's basketball gets 96-82 win over NeCC

Freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines led six players in double figures with 20 points as the DMACC men's basketball team took a 96-82 decision from Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) February 7 at Norfolk, Neb.

 

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona scored 19 points, freshman Omar Elchazli of Katy, Texas, had 17 points, sophomore James Glenn of Altoona came away with 11 points and sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston and freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City finished with 10 points apiece as the Bears improved to 22-3 overall and 11-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

The win gave DMACC sole possession of first place in the ICCAC with five conference games remaining on the schedule. The Bears were tied with Kirkwood Community College (KCC) at 10-2, but the Eagles dropped an 81-64 decision to Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on Feb. 7 to fall to 10-3 and are tied with ILCC for third place in the standings. Ellsworth Community College (ECC) is second to DMACC at 11-3.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), has completed its season series' with ECC and ILCC and faces KCC in an ICCAC showdown Feb. 21 at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Bears never trailed in beating NECC for the second time this season. They never led by more than six points through the first nine minutes of the opening half before using a 17-5 run to open up a 37-20 advantage with 4 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the half. DMACC had a 48-34 lead at halftime.

 

NECC trailed 62-51 at the 14:30 mark of the second half before using a 16-5 run to close to within one at 68-67 with 10:50 remaining. The Hawks trailed 80-75 when a steal by Lewis led to a layup by Winkel and ignited a 12-0 run that put DMACC up 92-75 with just more than a minute to play.

 

The Bears shot 50 percent, hitting 36 of 72 field goal attempts. They were 11-of-30 from three-point range and 13-of-24 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel had eight rebounds and Carson and sophomore Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., grabbed six apiece as DMACC came away with a 40-33 advantage on the boards. Lewis led the Bears in assist with six and Glenn, Lewis, Carson and Fisher had three steals apiece.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team is idle until Feb. 14 when the Bears will be home to Southwestern Community College (SWCC). The Spartans are 13-12 overall and 5-8 in the ICCAC. Their losses include an 82-64 decision to DMACC Jan. 10 at Creston.
