DMACC men's basketball team gets overtime win against Central
  • DMACC improves to 21-2 with seventh consecutive victory
  • Sophomores Trey Lewis, Victor Desmond and Angelo Winkel also score in double figures
  • Third-ranked Bears face No. 17 Iowa Lakes CC on February 3

Freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines led four players in double figures with 18 points, including a key three-pointer with a minute left in overtime, as the DMACC men's basketball team defeated Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC), 87-84, January 30 at Columbus, Neb.

Sophomores Trey Lewis of Johnston and Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., scored 16 points apiece and sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona had 15 points as the Bears ran their record to 21-2 with their seventh consecutive victory.

DMACC, which defeated the Raiders 87-69 Jan. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium, seemingly had control of the game with a 43-31 lead at halftime. But the Bears lever led by more than eight points in the last 19 minutes of the second half. CCC used a 15-6 run to grab a 68-66 lead with just less than four minutes remaining in regulation.

DMACC, ranked third in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), gained a 68-68 tie on a pair of free throws by Winkel with 2:15 to play and neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way. The game went into overtime tied at 72 after CCC's Blake Daberkow missed a jumper with four seconds left and Winkel missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

DMACC trailed 74-72 before a three-pointer by Carson put the Bears up 75-74 and they never trailed the rest of the way though the game was tied at 77, 79 and 81 before Carson's three-pointer with 1:05 remaining gave DMACC an 84-81 lead. Desmond made two free throws with 15 seconds left for an 86-81 lead before the Raiders closed to 86-84 on a three-pointer by Mukoma Kazadi with five seconds left. Lewis made a free throw two seconds later and a desperation three-pointer by Daberkow at the buzzer was off the mark.

DMACC shot 46 percent, hitting 32 of 69 field goal attempts, including 8-of-25 from three-point range. The Bears were 15-of-19 from the free throw line.

Lewis had nine rebounds and Winkel and sophomore Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., had six apiece to give the Bears a 34-33 advantage on the boards. Lewis led the way in assists with seven and Carson topped DMACC in steals with three.

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Feb. 3 at Estherville. The Lakers, ranked 17th in NJCAA Division II, are 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the ICCAC. Their wins include an 81-69 decision against seventh-ranked Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Jan. 10 at Estherville.
