Sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., led six players in double figures with 15 points as the DMACC men's basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Ellsworth Community College (ECC) with an 81-70 win over the Panthers January 27 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

Balanced scoring again contributed to the win with sophomore James Glenn of Altoona scoring 13 points. Sophomores Angelo Winkel of Algona and Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines had 12 points apiece and sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston came away with 11 points.

The win gives the Bears, 20-2 overall, sole possession of first place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) at 10-1. ECC fell to 9-2 and Kirkwood Community College (ICC) and Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) are third and fourth at 8-2 and 7-3 respectively.

All four teams are ranked 12th or higher in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). DMACC is fourth, ECC is seventh, KCC is 10th and ILCC is 12th. The remainder of DMACC's season schedule includes road games at ILCC and KCC.

DMACC, which dropped a 102-83 decision to ECC Jan. 6 at Iowa Falls, never trailed after a layup by Winkel gave the Bears a 10-9 lead with 14 minutes, 32 seconds left in the opening half. DMACC pushed its advantage to as many as 11 points before settling for a 33-24 lead at halftime.

The Bears led by 10, 38-28, before using a 10-4 run to open up a 48-32 with 14 minutes remaining in the game. ECC got within eight points several times in the final minutes but got no closer.

DMACC shot 48 percent from the field, hitting 28-of-59 field goal attempts, including 6-of-19 from three-point range. The Bears were 19-of-20 from the free throw line.

Carson came away with a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double and helped DMACC to a 45-30 advantage on the boards. Thomas had nine rebounds and Winkel added seven. Lewis topped the Bears in assists with five and Carson added four. Carson led DMACC in steals with five.

The DMACC men's basketball team steps away from ICCAC play with a road game against Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) Jan. 30 at Columbus, Neb. The Bears defeated the Raiders 87-69 when the two teams played Jan. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
