Sophomore Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., scored 23 points and sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona and Trevian Carson of Des Moines came away with double-doubles as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Western Iowa Technical Community College (WITCC) a 96-68 loss January 24 at Sioux City.

 

Five DMACC players scored in double figures as the Bears stretched their winning streak to five games. Freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 21 points, sophomore James Glenn of Altoona had 15, sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona tallied 13 points and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines finished with 11 points. Winkel and Carson recorded double doubles with 10 rebounds apiece.

 

DMACC, ranked fourth in this week's Division II poll, from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), never trailed in defeating WIT for the second time this season. The Bears, who have won 12 of their last 13 games, scored the game's first seven points and led by as many as 12 points before a 7-0 WIT rally got the Comets within five at 31-26 with 5 minutes, 24 seconds left in the first half. DMACC had a 45-35 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 29 points in the second half.

 

The Bears shot 48 percent from the field, hitting 39 of 81 field goal attempts. They were 11-of-34 from three-point range and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel and Carson led DMACC to a 34-28 advantage on the boards and sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston dished out a team-high 10 assists. Fisher topped DMACC in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) at 3 p.m. Jan. 27 inside the DMACC gymnasium and the Bears will be looking to avenge a 102-83 loss to the Panthers Jan. 6 at Iowa Falls. The Panthers, ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II, are 17-3 overall and 9-1 in the ICCAC. The two teams share the Division II lead in the ICCAC.
