DMACC men's basketball team gets 123-70 win over NECC
  • Sophomore Elijah Thomas leads six players in double figures with 22 points
  • DMACC puts the game out of reach in the first half; scores 67 points in the second half
  • Bears have surpassed 100 points in 10 games this season

 

Along with balanced scoring, 100-point games have also been a benchmark for the DMACC men's basketball team this season and both were prevalent when the Bears handed Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) a 123-70 loss January 23 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

DMACC's 123 points were a season high, surpassing the 117 points the Bears scored in 117-74 win over Carl Sandburg Community College (CSCC) in the Fun City Classic Nov. 4 at West Burlington. DMACC, 18-2 overall and 8-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), has surpassed the century mark in 10 of its 18 wins.

 

Sophomore Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz.,  led six DMACC players in double figures with 22 points. Sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston scored 19, sophomore James Glenn of Altoona had 15, freshman Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., came away with 14, sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona had 13 and sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis, tallied 11 points.

 

DMACC never trailed. The Bears had a 16-4 lead with the game just more than four minutes old and went into halftime with a 56-24 advantage. DMACC scored 67 points in the second half and led by as many as 54 points.

 

The Bears shot 54 percent in the win. They were 38-of-70 from the field, including 21-of-36 in the second half. DMACC made 17 of 30 three-point attempts, including 11-of-17 in the second half, and was 30-of-38 at the free throw line.

 

Freshman Sam Hytinen of Delafield, Wis., had eight rebounds to go with eight points as the Bears came away with a 44-29 advantage on the boards. Winkel and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines had five rebounds apiece and Thomas, Glenn, Desmond and freshman Omar Elchazli of Katy, Texas, had four apiece. Thomas, Glenn and Shakur topped DMACC in assists with five apiece and Glenn and Carson led the way in steals with five apiece. Shakur recorded four blocked shots and Carson had three.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team faces Western Iowa Tech (WIT) Jan. 24 at Sioux City. The Bears were 97-56 winners when the two teams played Dec. 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium. WIT is 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the ICCAC.
