DMACC men's basketball rolls to easy 106-70 win over IWCC

Balanced scoring has been a benchmark for the DMACC men's basketball team

in recent games and that was evident January 20 as six players scored in double figures in a 106-70 rout of Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona topped the Bears with 18 points. Sophomore James Glenn of Altoona scored 15 points, freshmen Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and Trevian Carson of Des Moines had 13 points apiece and sophomores Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., and Trey Lewis of Johnston had 11 and 10 points respectively.

 

DMACC improved to 17-2 with the win.

 

The outcome was decided early. DMACC led 12-2 with the game less than four minutes old and used a 26-10 run to open up a 38-12 lead with 8 minutes, 27 seconds left in the half. The Bears held a 63-24 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 45 points in the second half. IWCC never got closer than 31 points.

 

DMACC shot 59 percent in the win, making 40 of 68 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-20 from three-point range and 16-of-26 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Omar Elchazli of Katy, Texas, grabbed 10 rebounds in a reserve role as DMACC controlled the boards, 47-32. Elchazli narrowly missed a double-double with eight points.

Lewis, Thomas and Carson grabbed five rebounds apiece and Lewis led DMACC in assists with nine. Freshman Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., topped the Bears in steals with five and Thomas had four.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will be home to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) today. Game time is 7:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears are 7-1 in the ICCAC. NECC is 6-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
