Fourth-ranked DMACC men's basketball team falls to No. 7 ECC, 102-83

 

  • Sophomore Angelo Winkel leads DMACC with 20 points
  • Sophomores Trey Lewis and James Glenn score 15 and 14 points respectively
  • Bears see seven-game winning streak come to an end

 

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona scored 20 points as the DMACC men's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak end with a 102-83 loss to Ellsworth Community College (ECC) January 6 at Iowa Falls.

 

DMACC came into the game ranked fourth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). ECC is ranked seventh.

 

The Bears led 50-48 at halftime but were outscored 54-33 in the second half in falling to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Sophomores Trey Lewis of Johnston and James Glenn of Altoona joined Winkel in double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively.

 

Jordan Glenn-Hawkins led seven Ellsworth players in double figures with 17 points. The Panthers improved to 14-2 overall and 6-0 in the ICCAC with their seventh consecutive victory.

 

ECC had the advantage in shooting, hitting 40 of 77 field goal attempts, including going 12-of-23 from three-point range. The Panthers were 10-of-14 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC shot 48 percent with 29 field goals from 60 attempts. The Bears were 8-of-20 from three-point range and 17-of-22 from the free throw line.

ECC also had an advantage in rebounding, 44-30. Winkel and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines led the Bears with five rebounds apiece and Lewis, Glenn and sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., had four rebounds apiece. Lewis dished out a team-high 10 assists and freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City led DMACC in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Jan. 10 at Creston. The Spartans are 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the ICCAC.
