DMACC men's basketball team splits two games in DMACC Classic

The DMACC men's basketball team fell to 7-1 for the season after splitting two games in the DMACC Classic November 17 and 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston scored a season-high 30 points in the Bears' 104-91 win over North Central Missouri College (NCMC) on Nov. 17 and sophomore James Glenn of Altoona and freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City tallied 18 points apiece in a 91-85 loss to National Park College (NPC) on Nov. 18.

 

The loss was the first of the season for the Bears who won their first seven games.

 

DMACC is ranked third in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). NPC, a community college located near Hot Springs, Ark., is ranked 20th.

 

Lewis, who made 10 of 16 field goal attempts, including 3-of-9 from three-point range, led five players in double figures in the win over NCMC. Sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., scored 18 points, sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona had 15 and Glenn and Fisher finished with 14 and 13 respectively.

 

DMACC, which had a 49-45 lead at halftime, shot 59 percent from the field, making 37 of 63 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-25 from three-point range and 20-of-21 from the free throw line.

 

NCMC had a 31-29 advantage on the boards with Desmond and Winkel grabbing eight rebounds apiece to lead the Bears. Lewis dished out eight assists and Fisher and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines topped the Bears in steals with two apiece. Winkel recorded six blocked shots.

 

Nakavieon White and Ja'Bryant Hill accounted for more than half of NPC's points with 25 and 24 points respectively as the Nighthawks handed DMACC its first loss of the season. They led 45-42 at halftime and outscored the Bears 46-43 in the second half to come away with the win.

 

Winkel and Lewis joined Glenn and Fisher in double figures for DMACC with 12 and 10 points respectively. The Bears made 30 of 69 field goal attempts for 44 percent and were 13 of 40 from three-point range for 33 percent. DMACC shot 71 percent at the free throw line, making 12 of 17 free throw attempts.

 

Fisher recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds as the Bears came away with a decided advantage on the boards, 49-26. Lewis and Desmond had seven rebounds apiece and Carson finished with six. Lewis again led the Bears in assists with eight and Glenn and freshman Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., had two steals apiece.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Nov. 21 at Marshalltown. MCC, an NJCAA Division I program, is 1-5 this season
