Trey Lewis leads DMACC men's basketball team past DCTC, 81-64

Sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out nine assists and came away with five steals in leading the DMACC men's basketball team to an 81-64 win over Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) November 14 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., scored 14 points, freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City added 12 and sophomore James Glenn of Altoona finished with 10  points as the Bears topped the Blue Knights for the second time in four days. Their other win was a 79-64 decision in the DCTC Classic Nov. 10 at Inver Grove Heights, Minn.

 

DMACC, which moved from ninth to third in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led throughout the game. The Bears used a 24-4 run to open up a 24-6 lead with just more than nine minutes remaining in the first half and settled for a 34-28 advantage at intermission after DCTC put together a 12-2 run in the final 4 minutes, 42 seconds of the half.

 

The Blue Knights kept the momentum early in the second half, gaining a 34-34 tie with 18:33 remaining. DMACC then pulled away, opening up a seven-point advantage at 48-41 with 13:55 to play, and led the rest of the way. DCTC got within four at 61-57 with 7:21 left but a 15-2 run put DMACC in charge at 76-59 with just less than two minutes to go.

 

The Bears shot 48 percent from the field, hitting 30 of 62 field goal attempts. They were just 3-of-25 from three-point range and made 18 of 27 free throw attempts.

 

Both team came away with 38 rebounds with Lewis' seven boards leading the Bears. Glenn had six rebounds and Fisher and freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines had five apiece.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will host the DMACC Invitational Nov. 17 and 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears will play North Central Missouri College (NCMC) on Nov. 17 and will face National Park College (NPC) on Nov. 18. NPC, a community college located near Hot Springs, Ark., is ranked 20th in the NJCAA Division II poll.
