DMACC men's basketball team gets two wins in Dakota County Classic
  • Sophomore Angelo Winkel has 22 points in win over DCTC
  • Winkel leads five players in double figures with 18 points in win over RCTC
  • Bears face DCTC again on Nov. 14

 

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona scored 22 points in a win over Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) and tallied 18 points in a win over Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) in the Dakota County Classic November 10 and 11 at Inver Grove Heights, Minn.

 

Freshman Trey Lewis of Johnston scored 15 points and sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., came away with 13 as the Bears defeated DCTC, 79-64 on Nov. 10 and Lewis and sophomore James Glenn of Altoona had 13 points and freshman Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 11 as the Bears defeated RCTC, 89-70 on Nov. 11.

 

DMACC, ranked ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 5-0 with the wins.

 

The Bears led by as many as 14 points early in the game against DCTC but trailed 31-30 at halftime. Winkel's two free throws 11 seconds into the second half gave DMACC a 32-31 lead and the Bears led the rest of the way.

 

DMACC shot 51 percent, hitting 31 of 61 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-25 from three-point range and 9-of-23 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds as DCTC came away with a 49-44 advantage on the boards. Desmond added seven rebounds for the Bears. Lewis dished out a team-high eight assists and Glenn and Desmond topped the DMACC in steals with three apiece.

 

The Bears built a 46-26 lead at halftime and coasted past RCTC. They shot 49 percent from the field, making 36 of 73 field goal attempts, including going 10-of-28 from three-point range. DMACC was 7-of-10 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines came off the bench to grab nine rebounds and Desmond had eight as the Bears came away with a 46-35 advantage on the boards. Lewis led the way in assists with eight and Carson topped DMACC in steals with three.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face DCTC again, hosting the Blue Knights on Nov. 14. Game time is 6 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium
