Winkel's double-double helps DMACC men's basketball team past WPUJV, 95-62

Sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona recorded his first double-double of the season with 27 points and 11 rebounds as the DMACC men's basketball team rolled past the William Penn University Junior Varsity, 96-62, November 7 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Winkel's 27 points came from 12-of-15 shooting from the field and 10 of his 11 rebounds came on the defensive end of the floor.

 

Sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston contributed 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Bears improved, ranked ninth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 3-0 for the season. Sophomores Sam Hytinen of Delafield, Wis., and Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., joined Winkel and Lewis in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.

 

DMACC built a 56-33 halftime lead and coasted in the second half, leading by as many as 36 points on a couple of occasions.

 

The Bears shot 52 percent from the field, hitting 36 of 69 field goal attempts. They were 2-of-18 from three-point range and 21-of-29 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel's 11 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 55-32 advantage on the boards. Freshman Trevian Carson of Des Moines had seven rebounds and freshman Omar Elchazli of Katy, Texas, came away with six. Lewis and Carson topped the Bears in steals with two apiece.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play in the DCTC Classic Nov. 10 and 11 at Inver Grove Heights, Minn. The Bears will face Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) on Nov. 10 and will play Rochester Technical and Community College (RCTC) on Nov. 11. DCTC has received votes in the NJCAA Division II poll and RCTC is ranked third in NJCAA Division III.
