Four DMACC men's basketball players earn all-region honors

Four members of the DMACC men's basketball team have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI all-region teams announced today by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona was named to the first team, freshmen Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., and Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., were named to the second team and freshman Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., was named to the third team.

 

Winkel, one of two freshmen named to the first team, averaged 12.4 points and 6.1 rebounds a game for the Bears this season. He started all 32 games DMACC played scored 198 points. Winkel shot 55 percent from the field, making 163 of 296 field goal attempts. He was 8-of-30 from three-point range for 27 percent and made 67 of 92 free throw attempts for 73 percent. Winkel led the Bears in rebounding with 211 rebounds and his season also included 27 assists, seven steals and 24 blocked shots.

 

McGee started just three of the 30 games DMACC played this season but led the Bears in points with 420. He shot 54 percent from the field with 145 field goals in 270 attempts. McGee was 25-of-67 from three-point range for 37 percent and made 105 of 147 free throws for 71 percent. McGee's season also included 100 rebounds, 44 assists,17 steals and 10 blocked shots.

 

Abdelkarim started 11 of 30 games and finished the season with 321 points. He was 106 of 212 from the field for 50 percent and made 45 of 109 three-point shots for 41 percent. Abdelkarim shot 77 percent from the free throw line, making 64 of 83 attempts. His season also included 63 assists, 27 steals and three blocked shots.

 

Thomas played in 27 games and was named a starter in 24 of them. He finished the season with 240 points and averaged nine points a game. Thomas shot 38 percent from the field, making 85 of 225 field goal attempts. He was 51-of-173 from three-point range for 33 percent and made 13 of 22 free throw attempts for 59 percent. Thomas' season also included 97 rebounds, 15 assists, 28 steals and 15 blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team finished the season with a 24-8 record and an 11-5 mark in the ICCAC. The Bears were ranked in the top 20 of the NJCAA Division II poll throughout the season, including several weeks in the top ten. DMACC was the No. 3 seed in the NJCAA Region XI Men's Basketball Championships and advanced to the semifinals behind a 74-64 win over sixth-seeded Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) in the quarterfinals. Second-seeded Kirkwood ended the Bears' season with a 77-62 win in a semifinal matchup.
