DMACC's Angelo Winkel named ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball
  • Winkel scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in two DMACC victories
  • Winkel picked up his eighth double-double of the season during the week
  • Winkel is among the top five in the ICCAC in field goal shooting, offensive rebounds and total rebounds

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Angelo Winkel the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the week of February 13 to 19.

 

The honor is the third of the season for Winkel, a freshman from Algona, and he is one of three DMACC men's basketball players to be honored by the ICCAC this season. Winkel was also honored for the weeks of Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 and Jan. 16 to 22. Freshman Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., was honored the week of Jan. 9 to 15 and freshman Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., was honored for the week of Feb. 6 to 12.

 

Winkel scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in helping the Bears to two wins during the week. He had nine points and seven rebounds in a 78-63 win over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) Feb. 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium and recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 76-65 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 18 at Iowa Falls.

 

Winkel is among the conference leaders in field goal percentage, offensive rebounds and total rebounds. He is fifth in field goal shooting, making 55 percent of his shots. He is fifth in offensive rebounds with 63 and is fourth in total rebounds with 199.

 

Winkel has started all 28 games for the Bears this season and is averaging 13.4 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. He has scored 374 points and has made 75 of 136 field goal attempts. He is 3-of-15 from three-point range for 20 percent and has made 26 of 36 free throw attempts for 72 percent.

 

Winkel's 199 rebounds includes 136 defensive rebounds. He also has 24 assists, seven steals and 19 blocked shots this season.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team, ranked 13th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), faces Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in a key ICCAC matchup Feb. 23 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears hold a half game lead over the Eagles for second place in the league. DMACC is 22-6 overall and 10-4 in the ICCAC and KCC is 21-5 overall and 9-4 in conference play. The Eagles, ranked sixth in NJCAA Division II, won an earlier matchup, 81-64, Dec. 17 at Cedar Rapids.

 

The game was scheduled to be played this evening but has been postponed to Feb. 23 because of inclement weather.
