DMACC men's basketball team tops ECC 76-65 behind Winkel's double-double

 

Freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Ellsworth Community College (ECC) a 76-65 loss February 18 at Iowa Falls.

 

Freshmen Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., and Jaron Crews of Ankeny also scored in double figures with 16, 12 and 12 points respectively as the Bears ran their record to 22-6 overall and 10-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC, which swept its season series with the Panthers, took control of the game in the first half, opening up a 43-27 advantage at halftime.

 

The Bears shot 39 percent in the win, making 31 of 79 field goal attempts. They were 4-of-23 from three-point range and 10-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel, who made nine of 13 field goal attempts, helped DMACC to a 61-50 advantage on the boards with his 10 rebounds. Thomas came away with nine rebounds and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., had eight rebounds apiece. Abdelkarim and freshman Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., topped DMACC in assists with three apiece and Brown led the way in steals with four.

The DMACC men's basketball team will host Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Feb. 22 in a game featuring ranked teams. Game time is 7:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. DMACC is ranked 14th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and KCC is ranked 11th. The Eagles, 21-5 overall and 9-4 in the ICCAC, defeated the Bears, 81-64, when the two teams played Dec. 17 at Cedar Rapids
