DMACC's Kwat Abdelkarim named ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball
  • Abdelkarim average 12.5 points a game in helping the Bears to two wins
  • Abdelkarim shot 60 percent from the field in the two wins
  • Abdelkarim was almost perfect from three-point range, making six of seven attempts

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Kwat Abdelkarim the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the week of February 6 to 12.

 

Abdelkarim, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., is the third DMACC men's basketball player to be honored by the conference this season. Freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona earned the honor twice, the week of Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 and the week of Jan. 16 to 22. Cael McGee, a freshman from Stoughton, Wis., was honored the week of Jan. 9 to 15.

 

Abdelkarim averaged 12.5 points, 5 rebounds and 1.5 steals a game in helping the Bears to two wins during the week. He scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in an 82-63 win over Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) on Feb. 8 and had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals in a 74-72 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on Feb. 11.

 

Abdelkarim shot 60 percent from the field in the two games, making nine of 15 field goal attempts. He was nearly perfect from three-point range with six field goals in seven attempts.

 

Abdelkarim has scored 247 points this season and is shooting 49 percent from the field, having made 80 of 163 field goal attempts. He is 34-of-85 from three-point range for 40 percent and is tied for second place in the conference in three-point shooting. Abdelkarim has made 53 of 67 free throw attempts for 79 percent. For the season he has 115 rebounds, including 94 defensive rebounds, 51 assists, 22 steals and one blocked shot.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team is ranked 14th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Bears, 20-6 overall and 8-4 in the ICCAC, are home to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) at 7:30 p.m. today. IWCC is 12-14 overall and 4-8 in the ICCAC. The Reivers came away with an 86-83 double-overtime win when the two teams played Jan. 17 at Council Bluffs.
