DMACC men's basketball team gets balanced scoring in 82-63 win over Central (Neb.)

 

Freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona led four players in double figures with 14 points as the DMACC men's basketball team defeated Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) 82-63 February 8 at Columbus, Neb.

 

Freshmen Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., and Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., had 13 points apiece and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Saiveon Williams of Chicago, Ill., scored 12 points for the Bears, who improved to 19-6 for the season.

 

DMACC, ranked 17th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), trailed by seven points early in the game but took the lead for good at 16-15 on a jumper by Williams at the 10 minute, 29 second mark of the half. The basket began at 13-4 run that gave the Bears a 29-19 advantage with 5:19 remaining in the half. They led 45-30 at halftime and never led by less than nine points in the second half. DMACC was ahead by as many as 22 points late in the game.

 

The Bears shot 52 percent, making 34 of 65 field goal attempts. They were 6-of-13 from three-point range and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., had seven rebounds and Williams and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., had six apiece as DMACC came away with a 46-24 advantage on the boards. Winkel and freshman Jaron Crews of Ankeny had five rebounds apiece. Brown and CoSO Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., dished out three assists apiece and McGee topped the Bears in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Feb. 11 at Estherville. DMACC is 7-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ILCC). The Lakers, ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II, are 18-6 overall and 10-1 in the conference. One of their wins was a 96-85 decision over the Bears Dec. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
