Williams leads DMACC men's basketball team past NIACC, 87-60

 

Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Saiveon Williams of Chicago, Ill., scored 20 points and led four players in double figures as the DMACC men's basketball team handed North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) an 87-60 loss January 25 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The win gave the Bears a sweep of their two-game series with the Trojans and DMACC improved to 17-5 overall and 6-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Williams made nine of 11 shots from the field, including his only three-point attempt. He made one of two free throw attempts. Freshmen Angelo Winkel of Algona, Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., and Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., joined Williams in double figures with 16, 14 and 13 points respectively.

 

DMACC, ranked 14th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led just 35-33 at halftime but pulled away in the second half behind 52 points while limited the Trojans to 27 points. The Bears opened the half with a 22-9 run for a 57-42 advantage with 13 minutes, 13 seconds to play and coasted the rest of the way. They led by as many as 30 points in the final minutes.

 

DMACC shot 47 percent in the win, making 35 of 74 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-23 from three-point range and 9-of-16 from the free throw line.

CoSO Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., grabbed 16 rebounds and Winkel recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 15 as DMACC came away with a 54-39 advantage on the boards. Freshman Jaron Crews of Ankeny led the Bears in assists with six and McGee and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., had five apiece. Brown topped the Bears in steals with three.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) Feb. 1 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Hawks are 11-10 overall and 3-6 in the ICCAC. DMACC was a 74-69 winner when the two teams played Dec. 7 at Norfolk, Neb.
