DMACC men's basketball team drops double-overtime decision to IWCC, 86-83

The DMACC men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to a close with an 86-83 double-overtime loss to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) January 17 at Council Bluffs.

 

The loss is the fifth of the season against 15 wins for the Bears, who are ranked 11th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). DMACC is 4-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC).

 

Freshman Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., led DMACC with 18 points. Freshman Angelo Winkel of Angola had 16 points and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., scored 15 and 14 points respectively.

 

The game was close all the way. DMACC led at halftime, 31-29, and the game was tied at 72 at the end of regulation. A 78-78 tie at the end of the first overtime sent the game to a second extra period where the Reivers came away with the win. They never trailed in the five-minute period, taking an 82-78 lead with 1 minute, 57 seconds to play and led 85-80 with 27 seconds left.

 

The Bears shot 37 percent in the loss, making 32 of 86 field goal attempts. They were 5-of-24 from three-point range and 14-of-23 from the free throw line.

DMACC had a 47-46 advantage in rebounding with Sneed coming away with a double-double behind 17 rebounds. Brown had nine rebounds and Winkel added six. Sneed and Brown led the Bears in assists with three apiece and Brown topped DMACC in steals with three.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Jan. 21 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC is 14-4 overall and 4-3 in the ICCAC. The Panthers are ranked 17th in NJCAA Division II.
