Winkel's 16 points lead DMACC men's basketball team past JWCC, 76-53

Freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and freshman Jaron Crews of Ankeny added 11 points as the DMACC men's basketball team handed John Wood Community College (JWCC) a 76-53 loss January 4 at Quincy, Ill.

 

The Bears, ranked 15th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 12-4 with the win, which avenged an 83-75 loss to the Blazers in the DMACC Invitational Nov. 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears never trailed after Winkel's jumper tied the game at 2-2 a minute into the opening half. The basket ignited a 20-4 run that allowed DMACC to open up a 20-6 lead with 14 minutes, 22 seconds left in the half. DMACC led by as many as 23 points before settling for a 44-25 advantage at halftime. The Bears' lead was never less than 13 points in the second half and they led by as many as 24 points.

 

DMACC shot 49 percent in the win, making 33 of 67 field goal attempts. The Bears were just 4-of-22 from three-point range and made six of nine free throw attempts.

 

Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., joined Winkel with 10 rebounds as the Bears came away with a 49-27 advantage on the boards. Crews and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., dished out four assists apiece and CoSO Saiveon Williams of Chicago, Ill., topped DMACC in steals with five.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will host Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Jan. 7. Game time is 2 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears are 2-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). SWCC is 5-10 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
