DMACC men's basketball team tops NIACC, 92-69

Freshman Angelo Winkel led five players in double figures with 20 points as the DMACC men's basketball team took a 92-69 decision from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) December 3 at Mason City.

 

Freshmen Jaron Crews of Ankeny, Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., and Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., scored 16, 14 and 13 points respectively and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., finished with 10 points as the Bears improved to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their third straight win.

 

DMACC, ranked 14th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), held just a 39-36 lead at halftime but put the game away by outscoring the Trojans 53-33 in the second half.

 

The Bears shot 43 percent, making 32 of 74 field goal attempts. They were 5-of-17 from three-point range and 23-of-31 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds, helping DMACC to a 61-41 advantage on the boards. Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., also had 10 rebounds and Crews and freshman Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., came away with seven apiece. Crews led the Bears in assists with five and Winkel blocked two shots.

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) Dec. 7 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the ICCAC.
