DMACC men's basketball team splits two games in DMACC Invitational

After opening the season with six consecutive victories, the DMACC men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season when John Wood Community College (JWCC) came away with an 83-75 victory over DMACC in the DMACC Invitational November 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, ranked fourth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), pushed their winning streak to seven games behind an 80-69 win over Allen County Community College (ACCC) in their tournament opener on Nov. 18.

 

Freshman Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., led four players in double figures with 19 points in the win over ACCC. Freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona had 15 points, freshman Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., scored 12 and freshman Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., came away with 10 points in the win. DMACC had a 38-30 advantage at halftime.

 

The Bears shot 49 percent, hitting 28 of 57 field goal attempts. They were 9-of-22 from three-point range and made 15 of 20 free throw attempts. McGee got his 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. He made four of five three-point attempts and was a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel's nine rebounds staked DMACC to a 42-32 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., had six rebounds and Desmond, freshman Jaron Crews of Ankeny and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Saiveon Williams of Chicago, Ill., had five rebounds apiece. Brown led DMACC in assists and steals with five and three respectively.

 

Winkel scored 22 points and barely missed a double-double with nine rebounds in the Bears' loss to JWCC. Thomas and McGee joined Winkel in double figures with 16 and 12 points respectively. JWCC led at halftime, 39-35.

 

DMACC shot 39 percent, making 25-of-64 field goal attempts. The Bears made just four of 28 three-point attempts and were 21-of-35 from the free throw line.

 

Winkel's nine rebounds and eight from CoSO Jimarius Sneed of Chicago helped DMACC to a 48-35 advantage on the boards. Brown and CoSO Jean Francois of Coral Springs, Fla., had six rebounds apiece and McGee added five. Crews had a team-high four assists and led the Bears in steals with two.

 

DMACC, 7-1, is home to Bryant and Stratton College (BSC) today. Game time is 6 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. BSC, located in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wis., brings a 6-1 record into the game. The Bobcats have won their last five games, including a 68-67 decision over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) on Nov. 19.
