Elijah Thomas and Cael McGee lead DMACC men's basketball team past Dakota County, 110-80

 

Freshmen Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz., and Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., scored 20 points apiece to lead the DMACC men's basketball team to a 110-80 win over Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) November 12 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshmen Jaron Crews of Ankeny, Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., Angelo Winkel of Algona and sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., added 19, 14, 13 and 12 points respectively as the Bears, ranked sixth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 5-0 for the season.

 

DMACC pulled away from a 12-12 tie with an 18-6 run that gave the Bears a 30-18 advantage midway through the first half. DMACC continued to push its momentum and opened up a 55-31 lead at halftime. The Bears led by as many as 35 points in the second half.

 

DMACC shot 56 percent in the win, connecting on 36 of 64 field goal attempts. The Bears were 14-of-27 from three-point range and made 24 of 37 free throw attempts.

 

Winkel recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 52-34 advantage on the boards. Abdelkarim came away with seven rebounds and Thomas and Brown had six apiece. Crews dished out nine assists and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Saiveon Williams of Chicago, Ill., recorded four blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team is idle until Nov. 18 and 19 when the Bears host the DMACC Classic. DMACC will face Allen County Community College (ACCC) Nov. 18 and will play John Wood Community College (JWCC) on Nov. 19. ACCC and JWCC are ranked 16th and 17th respectively in the NJCAA Division II poll.
