DMACC men's basketball team picks up two wins in Southeastern Classic

The DMACC men's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a pair of wins in the Southeastern Classic November 4 and 5 at West Burlington.

 

Sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., tallied 15 points to lead the Bears past Spoon River College (SRC), 80-69, on Nov. 4 and Covid-19 sophomore Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., had 20 points as DMACC topped Central Christian College (CCC), 96-49, Nov. 5.

 

Freshmen Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., Saiveon Williams of Chicago, Ill., and Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., joined Brown in double figures with 14, 12 and 11 points respectively in the Bears' win over SRC. DMACC led 39-37 at halftime and pulled away in the final four minutes to secure their second win of the season.

 

The Bears shot 45 percent from the field, hitting 31 of 69 field goal attempts. They were 7-of-26 from three-point range and 11-of-19 from the free throw line. Brown's 15 points came from six field goal in eight attempts and he was 3-of-5 from three-point range.

 

The Bears had a 48-39 advantage on the boards with Covid-19 sophomore Jimarius Sneed of Chicago, Ill., pulling down nine rebounds to lead DMACC. Abdelkarim and Williams had seven rebounds apiece and Brown, Desmond and freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona had five apiece. Freshman Jaron Crews of Ankeny dished out six assists and had a pair of steals as did Desmond and freshman Elijah Thomas of Surprise, Ariz.

 

DMACC trailed CCC 3-0 early but took the lead for good at 5-3 on a three-pointer by Thomas at the 15:47 mark of the first half and never looked back in improving to 3-0 for the season. The Bears had a 49-23 lead at halftime.

 

Thomas and Sneed joined McGee in double figures with 16 and 15 points respectively.

 

DMACC shot 55 percent in the win, draining 38 of 69 field goal attempts. The Bears were 11-of-28 from three-point range and made nine of 19 free throw attempts.

 

Williams pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Bears to a 54-31 advantage on the boards. Sneed and Covid-19 sophomore Jean Francois of Coral Springs. Fla. had eight rebounds apiece and McGee added seven. Sneed led the Bears in assists with five, Abdelkarim had four and McGee and Desmond had three apiece. Brown, Crews and Williams had two steals apiece and Williams blocked three shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will open the home season Nov. 8 against the Graceland University junior varsity. Game time is 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The game will be the first of eight consecutive home games for the Bears.
