DMACC men's basketball team tops MATC to reach Final Four

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Goanar Biliew of Denison scored 23 points and Covid-19 sophomores (CoSO) Jadan Graves of Syracuse, N.Y. and Noah Parcher of LaCrosse, Wis., came away with 16 and 14 points respectively as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) an 85-70 loss in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Basketball Championship March 17 at Danville, Ill.

 

The win sends the Bears to the semifinals where they will face top-seeded South Suburban College (SSC). Game time is 6:30 p.m. DMACC, the defending national champion and the tournament's No. 4 seed, takes a 27-7 record into the game. SSC is 31-0.

 

DMACC is making its fourth appearance in the Final Four since 2000. In addition to winning the championship in 2021, the Bears finished fourth in 2015 and 2002.

 

DMACC never trailed in its win over MATC. The Bears raced away to a 5-0 lead on a three-point basket by freshman Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., and a layup by Parcher. DMACC had a 16-6 lead with the game just more than seven minutes old and led by as many as 14 points in the half. The Bears settled for a 40-26 advantage at halftime.

 

DMACC's lead in the second half bounced between 12 and 19 points before a late MATC spurt got the Stormers to within seven at 66-59 with six minutes, 28 seconds to play.

 

MATC was within eight at 78-70 with 1:30 to play before DMACC put the game away behind a three-pointer from Graves and free throws from Graves and Parcher.

 

DMACC shot 45 percent in the win, making 27 of 60 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-22 from three-point range and 25-of-28 at the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 48-41 advantage on the boards with Graves' eight rebounds and seven from Biliew leading the way. Parcher had six rebounds and Brown led the Bears in assists with four. Biliew recorded a pair of blocked shots and Parcher had two steals.
