Biliew leads DMACC men's basketball team past seventh-ranked IWCC, 90-86

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Goanar Biliew of Denison scored a career-high 31 points to lead the DMACC men's basketball team to a 90-86 upset of Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) January 12 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Covid-19 sophomores Jadan Graves of Syracuse, N.Y., and Noah Parcher of LaCrosse, Wis., finished with 18 and 15 points respectively and freshman Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., had 10 points as the Bears improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Biliew got his 31 points on 10 field goals in 12 attempts and went 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

 

IWCC is ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. DMACC is not ranked but has received votes in the poll.

 

The Bears had to come from behind to get the win. They started slowly and trailed 27-11 midway through the first half before using a 23-6 run to take a 34-33 lead with 3 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the half. The Bears led 43-38 at halftime and never trailed in the second half, leading by as many as 10 points on two separate occasions.

 

IWCC closed to within two points at 82-80 with 2:14 to play, but Graves responded with a three-point basket and then a two-pointer to put the Bears up 87-80 with a minute left. IWCC got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

 

DMACC shot 52 percent in the win, hitting 29 of 56 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-15 from three-point range and 24-of-37 from the free throw line.

 

Biliew's came away with eight rebounds to lift DMACC to a 42-38 advantage on the boards. Graves and sophomore Mike Hartford of McKinney, Texas, had seven rebounds apiece and Graves and Parcher dished out five assists apiece. Biliew and Graves came away with two blocked shots each.
