DMACC men drop 2 nationally ranked foes

The DMACC men's basketball team improved to 5-1 for the season with wins over Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) and John Wood Community College (JWCC) in the John Wood Classic November 12 and 13 at Quincy, Ill.

 

The Bears, ranked sixth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, defeated No. 12 MATC 65-63 on Nov. 12 and then handed 11th-ranked JWCC an 85-81 overtime loss on Nov. 13. DMACC ran its winning streak to three games with the victories.

 

Covid-19 freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison scored 17 points and freshman Joe Blair of Biella, Italy, and sophomore Jadan Graves of Syracuse, N.Y., added 14 and 13 points respectively to lead the Bears past MATC. DMACC led by as many as 19 points in the first half, settled for 37-23 advantage at halftime and held off a second-half charge by the Stormers to come away with the win.

 

The Bears shot 40 percent from the field, making 23 of 58 field goal attempts. They were 9-of-27 from three-point range and 10-of-20 from the free throw line.

 

MATC had a 52-34 advantage on the boards with Graves and freshman Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., pulling down five rebounds apiece to lead DMACC. Sophomore Noah Parcher of LaCrosse, Wis., and CoFR Preston Thomas of Princeton, Mo., had two assists apiece and sophomore Michael Hartford of McKinney, Texas, and Brown had two steals apiece. Biliew recorded two blocked shots.

 

Parcher had a season-high 31 points and Graves added 25 in DMACC's win over JWCC. The Bears led 37-29 at halftime but were outscored 42-34 in the second half as JWCC sent the game into overtime knotted at 71.

 

DMACC shot 41 percent in the win, hitting 27 of 66 field goal attempts. The Bears shot 38 percent from three-point range, making 11 of 29 attempts, and were 20-of-29 from the free throw line for 69 percent.

 

Parcher's 31 points came on 11-of-20 shooting. He was 4-of-7 from three-point range and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Graves made just six of 16 field goal attempts, but five of those field goals came from 11 attempts beyond the arc. He also made eight of nine free throw attempts.

 

JWCC had a 43-38 advantage on the boards with Brown's 10 rebounds leading DMACC. Biliew added six rebounds and Graves led the Bears in assists with five. Parcher and Brown led the way in steals with two apiece.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will host Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) Nov. 16. Game time is 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium.
