Bears hold off pesky Triton squad

Sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points as the DMACC men's basketball team improved to 16-4 with a 91-83 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) March 31 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomores Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter and Devin Wade-Henderson of Minneapolis, Minn., scored 15 points apiece as the Bears improved to 16-4 with their second win of the season against the Tritons.

 

The win closed out the regular season home schedule for DMACC.

 

The Bears, ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led just 40-37 at halftime but controlled the tempo throughout the second half, leading by as many as 12 points with less than 15 minutes to play.

 

DMACC shot 48 percent, hitting 32 of 67 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-23 from three-point range and 20-of-22 from the free throw line.

 

Wade-Henderson came away with a double-double, collecting 11 rebounds to go with his 15 points and helping DMACC to a 51-31 advantage on the boards. Guy also had a double-double with 10 rebounds and Haffner pulled down seven. Haffner and Guy dished out six and five assists respectively and Wade-Henderson had four block assists while Schmitt recorded a pair of blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team closes out the regular season against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) April 3 at Council Bluffs. DMACC defeated the Reivers 80-68 when the two teams played March 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium. IWCC is 11-10 this season.
