Bariffe-Smith leads DMACC men's basketball team past SWCC, 86-50

 

Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., led five players in double figures with 22 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 86-50, January 25 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, ranked third in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 18-3 with the win. They lead Division II of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) at 6-1.

 

Sophomores Zach Lester of Clear Lake, Barlow Alleruzzo of Chicago, Ill., and Ty Majlik-Autry of St. Petersburg, Fla., and freshman Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter joined Bariffe-Smith in double figures. Lester scored 13 points, Schmitt had 12 and Alleruzzo and Majlik-Autry contributed 11 points apiece.

 

DMACC led 45-27 at halftime and controlled the game throughout the second half. The Bears shot 52 percent, hitting 32 of 62 field goal attempts. They were 10-of-29 from three-point range and 12-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

Majlik-Autry finished with a double-double with 12 rebounds, leading DMACC to a 50-27 advantage on the boards. Bariffe-Smith added nine rebounds and Alleruzzo and Schmitt finished with six apiece. Lester dished out a team-high six assists and Bariffe-Smith and freshman Mike Hartford of McKinney, Texas, had two steals apiece. Schmitt had five blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team is home to Central (Neb.) Community College (CNCC) on Jan. 28. Game time is 6 p.m.
