Bijiek leads DMACC men's basketball team past Graceland JV

Sophomore Jal Bijiek of Des Moines led five players in double figures with 15 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team recorded its first win under first-year head coach Josh Sash with a 95-50 victory over the Graceland University junior varsity (GUJV) November 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., tallied 14 points, freshman V.J. Wilmington of Davenport had 12 points and freshmen John Herrick of Boone and Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter scored 11 and 10 points respectively as the Bears improved to 1-1 for the season.

 

DMACC shot 51 percent in the first half to take a 47-21 advantage at halftime and coasted to the win in the second half. For the game the Bears were 36-of-71 from the field for 51 percent. They made five of 24 three-point attempts and were 18-of-23 from the free throw line.

 

Herrick recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 56-27 advantage on the boards. Freshman Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids dished out a team-high five assists and freshman Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., had four assists. Sophomore Zach Lester of Clear Lake and Herrick led DMACC in steals with two apiece and Herrick had two blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play the Simpson College junior varsity (SCJV) Nov. 9 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 6 p.m.
