DMACC men's basketball team tops LPT, upsets NIACC

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team came away with a win against Little Priest Tribal (LPT) on Feb. 27 and upset North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Feb. 28 to improve to 20-9 overall and 7-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Sophomore Dyllan Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev., led six players in double figures with 16 points as the Bears defeated LPT, 118-71, at Winnebago, Neb. Sophomore Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., added 15 points, sophomore Quinton Taylor of Cedar Point, Texas, and freshmen Vinny Tarello of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Zach Lester of Clear Lake tallied 14 points apiece and sophomore Tray Buchanan of East Moline, Ill., had 12 points as DMACC swept its season series with LPT.

 

The Bears led throughout the game, including 51-23 at halftime. They pushed their advantage to as many as 49 points late in the second half.

 

DMACC shot 56 percent in the win, hitting 45 of 80 field goal attempts. The Bears were 11-of-26 from three-point range and 17-of-27 from the free throw line.

 

Sophomore Zaire Swaby pf Brooklyn, N.Y., hauled down 13 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 57-37 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Ray Miller of Davenport grabbed six rebounds and Robinson finished with five. Tarello led the Bears in assists with nine and sophomore DeShawn Davidson of Waukegan, Ill., added six with Buchanan getting five. Buchanan also had a pair of steals.

 

Robinson and Taylor scored 21 points apiece and Davidson added 17 in DMACC's 96-89 upset win against NIACC at Mason City. The Trojans came into the game with a 23-3 record, including a 12-1 mark in the ICCAC, and were ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.

 

The Bears, who got 11 points from Buchanan and 10 from Lester, led at halftime, 43-40. The win avenged a 106-100 NIACC victory Jan. 16 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

DMACC shot over 50 precent for the second straight game, hitting 35 of 66 field goal attempts for 53 percent. The Bears were 8-of-23 from three-point range and 18-of-21 from the free throw line.

 

Robinson and Swaby pulled down nine rebounds apiece to help DMACC to a 40-40 tie in rebounding. Taylor added seven rebounds and Davidson led the Bears in assists with three. Buchanan topped DMACC in steals with four.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team closes out the regular season March 2 when the Bears face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). Game time is 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 12-17 overall and 4-9 in the ICCAC. DMACC defeated the Tritons, 90-63, when the two teams played Jan. 26 at Fort Dodge.
