DMACC baseball team upsets Ellsworth CC in Region 11 tourney

Sophomore Kaden Frommelt of Marion singled home one run and freshman Brock Moore of Urbandale belted a grand-slam home run, all in the ninth inning, as the  DMACC baseball team handed Ellsworth Community College (ECC) an 8-3 loss in the first game of the 2025 Division II Region 11 Baseball Tournament today at Carroll.

DMACC, the No. 5 seed, moves on to face top-seeded Southeastern Community College (SECC) in a championship bracket game May 9 at 3:30 p.m. ECC, the No. 4 seed, will play either third-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) or sixth-seeded Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in an elimination game later today.

Sophomore Jackson Manning of Keosauqua began the DMACC ninth with a base on balls and moved to third on a base hit by freshman Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D. Frommelt followed with a single to left center, scoring Manning and sending Leininger to third. Freshman Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., walked and after freshman Trey Franck of Marion struck out, Moore homered over the fence in left field to give the Bears an 8-3 lead.

Freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake allowed two base runners in the bottom of the ninth but kept the Panthers off the scoreboard to preserve the win for freshman Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D. Miller improved to 2-6 for the season.

DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Frommelt homered and ECC tied it in the bottom of the fifth on a home run by Boston Doeschot. The Panthers took a 3-1 lead on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and DMACC tied it with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Archer Ogbourne of Carlisle and Manning started the Bears' seventh inning rally with back-to-back walks. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch and Crancer hit a two-out double to tie the score.

Frommelt and Crancer had three hits and two RBIs apiece and Moore and sophomore Colin Driscoll of Waukee collected two hits apiece, including a double by Driscoll.

Sophomore Carter Woollums of Johnston pitched the first five and a third innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked two.
