DMACC baseball team takes two of three games against SWCC

The DMACC baseball team sits at 17-24 overall and 11-12 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after winning two of three games against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) April 18 and 19 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears took a 9-inning game on April 18, 4-3, and won the first game of a doubleheader on April 19, 7-4. SWCC took the second game by an 11-3 score.

 

Freshman Archer Ogbourne of Carlisle walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kaden Frommelt of Marion to give the Bears the win on April 18. SWCC took a 3-0 lead in the second and DMACC responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-2 lead. The Spartans tied it with a run in the top of the eighth.

 

Ogbourne and Frommelt paced the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece including a pair of doubles by Frommelt. Ogbourne had a triple and freshmen Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., and Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., hit a double and a triple respectively.

 

Sophomore Jaqson Tejada of Marion pitched the first six innings for DMACC, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake threw one inning and gave up a run on one hit with one strikeout and one walk and freshman Gage Miller of Madan, N.D., recorded one strikeout in an inning on the mound. He came away with his first win of the season against five losses. Sophomore Bobby Uthe of Ames earned his first save in one inning of work. He struck out one batter walked one.

 

DMACC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on April 19 and made it a 6-0 game with one run in each of the third and fourth innings and two in the fifth. SWCC cut the lead to 6-4 with four runs in the top of the sixth before DMACC added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

 

The Bears were limited to eight hits in the win, including a double by Leininger and a triple from freshman Martin Smith of Boone. Smith led the Bears in RBIs with two.

 

Sophomore Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., went five and a third innings and improved to 3-1 with the win. He allowed four runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked two. Freshman Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter pitched a third of an inning and walked two batters and freshman Nick Cox of Polk City got his third save of the season in an inning and a third on the mound. He struck out two batters and walked one.

 

SWCC never trailed in winning the nightcap. The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the fourth and added a run in the fifth, two in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth. DMACC scored two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth.

 

Ogbourne and freshmen Jake Espeland of Des Moines and Brady Walton of Waukee paced the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a double by Ogbourne. Crancer and sophomore Carter Bryan of Johnston also doubled. Ogbourne, Espeland and Walton drove in the DMACC runs.

 

Uthe pitched the first four innings and fell to 1-2 with the loss. He allowed three runs on three hits, struck out three and walked four. Freshman Eli Christensen of Ankeny pitched a third of an inning and allowed one run with two walks and freshman Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Zach Turpin of Waukee pitched a third of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and freshman Carter Van Meer of Inwood allowed two runs on one hit with one walk. Freshman Carter Hines of Fruita, Colo., threw two-thirds of an inning and walked one batter.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Southeastern Community College (SECC) in a doubleheader April 23 at West Burlington. SECC is 35-9 overall and leads the ICCAC at 19-3. DMACC handed the Blackhawks their first conference, loss, 8-0, April 10 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
