The DMACC baseball team made a bit of noise in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) on April 10 as the Bears handed Southeastern Community College (SECC) its first conference loss after 14 consecutive wins.
Freshmen Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., belted a two-run home run for DMACC and freshman Jack Espeland of Des Moines added a solo shot as the Bears improved to 14-20 overall and 8-8 in the ICCAC. Freshmen Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., and sophomore Carter Bryan of Johnston also drove in two runs apiece for DMACC.
SECC, ranked fourth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), fell to 29-7 and 14-1.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Carter reached on an infield single, moved to third on a double by sophomore Colin Driscoll of Waukee and scored on an infield grounder by freshman Brady Walton of Waukee. Leininger's one-out single in the third got freshman Archer Ogbourne of Carlisle home with the second DMACC run and Crancer gave the Bears a 4-0 lead with a two-run homer in the third. Sophomore Jackson Manning of Keosauqua scored ahead of Crancer after reaching on a fielder's choice.
DMACC wasn't finished in the third as Leininger followed Crancer's homer with a base hit and moved around on a hit batsman, a walk and an infield out by Bryan.
Espeland's home run in the sixth made it a 6-0 game and the Bears closed it out on an RBI single by Bryan in the seventh and a run-scoring ground out by Leininger in the eighth.
Ogbourne paced DMACC's 14-hit attack with three singles and Crancer, Leininger, Bryan and Driscoll had two hits apiece, including a pair of doubles by Driscoll. Sophomore Kaden Frommelt of Marion also doubled for the Bears.
Sophomore Ty Thomson of Council Bluffs improved to 3-3 with the win, He went six innings, allowing three hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake worked two innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and freshman Nick Cox of Polk City pitched the ninth inning and retired all three batters he faced.
The DMACC baseball team will play a three-game series against Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) April 12 and 13 at Centerville. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 12 and a single game on April 13. IHCC is 16-16 overall and 10-5 in the ICCAC.
